The wearing of seat belts in buses has been made mandatory since July 1, and within the 1,194 related saman issued by the road transport department (JPJ) nationwide, its Melaka chapter has issued 153 from July 1-29, reports Bernama.
“The violations were detected through undercover officers and regular enforcement operations. The seat belt rule has been mandatory for express and tour buses since July 1,” Melaka JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop said, adding that 135 saman were issued to passengers and 18 to drivers.
JPJ has held engagement sessions with express and tour bus operators, and provided promotional materials for display in buses, to raise awareness, she said.
Bus passengers are encouraged to file complaints (accompanied by photo or video evidence and details of the bus journey) to the department via the MyJPJ app or email if there’s something wrong with their seat belts, such as if they’re missing, broken or not working.
