Thailand’s cabinet has approved a 40 billion baht (US$1.2 billion/RM5 billion) bid to host a Formula One (F1) street race in Bangkok in 2028, reports Reuters.
“In the next 2-3 years, Thailand will have world-class competition, which we never thought would actually happen in Thailand,” government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said, adding that if successful, Bangkok would win a contract to host a race each year from 2028-2032.
After meeting F1 chief Stefano Domenicali in March, Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said the country would commission a feasibility study into hosting a Grand Prix on a Bangkok street circuit from 2028, despite already having the FIA-accredited, MotoGP-hosting Buriram circuit.
“Thailand sees the opportunity to host a Formula One Grand Prix in the future as a key initiative to elevate our profile as a hub for international tourism and global events,” she said on social media.
