The LLM has announced a special Smartlane on the PLUS North South Highway for today, December 24. The Smartlane is from Bukit Tambun (S) to Jawi in Penang, KM159.3 to KM162.7, southbound. It was opened at 12.30 pm and will be in place till 10pm tonight.

This is in addition to the 25 Smartlane stretches that were announced by PLUS earlier for the Christmas and New Year holiday period (December 20 to January 2). The concessionaire is expecting traffic volume to increase to 2.12 million vehicles a day this holiday season, compared to 1.85 million vehicles on regular days.

As always with the Smartlane – which opens the emergency lane up for light vehicles – a signboard to indicate an upcoming Smartlane will be posted 1km before it starts, followed by another 500 metres before the point. Within each stretch, there will be reminder signboards every half a km, and another signboard to indicate the end of the zone. PLUS has also installed flashing green lights on Smartlane signboards to indicate their activation.
