Tesla Model Q ‘Redwood’ – sub $30k model launching in H1 2025, 15% smaller than Model 3 at half the cost?

Tesla is set to launch a new EV called the ‘Model Q’ in the first half of 2025. This is the much-anticipated sub-US$30,000 (RM132,933) model that will compete against the BYD Dolphin (facelift has just surfaced) and Volkswagen ID.3, among other compact electric hatchbacks.

Tesla’s most affordable model was apparently revealed in an investor meeting with Deutsche Bank attended by the company’s head of investor relations, Travis Axelrod, reported by GlobalChinaEV. It seems to run contrary to CEO Elon Musk’s recent comments of a sub-US$25k non-autonomous Tesla as “pointless, silly and completely at odds with what we believe,” though.

The Model Q, codenamed ‘Redwood’, will be built on Tesla’s latest platform. It is said that the Q will be 15% smaller and 30% lighter than the Model 3 sedan, with overall length of around four metres. The plan is to fit in a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery in 53 kWh and 75 kWh capacities, powering one or two motors. Estimated range of 500 km.

Crucially, the Q’s manufacturing cost will be approximately half of the Model 3’s, allowing for a lower selling price. The report says that post-subsidy, the Model Q could be priced as low as US$25,000 (RM110,781) in its home market. Should the Model Q be made at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, the selling price could be even lower, expected at around 140,000 yuan (RM85,446).

This is an interesting development that we’ll keep tabs on, but as with all things Tesla, it’s better to only believe once the car hits the showrooms. Anyway, what do you think of a RM100k Tesla hatchback?
