Assisted driving will increasingly take on a more central role in motoring experiences of the future. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Volkswagen and Nvidia announced that the German automaker will be using technology from the computing specialist for the development of future intelligent Volkswagen models.
“Artificial intelligence is revolutionising the car. Autonomous driving, zero-emission mobility and digital networking are virtually impossible without advances in AI and deep learning,” said CEO of Volkswagen Herbert Diess. Every new vehicle should have AI (artificial intelligence) assistants for voice, gesture and facial recognition, as well as augmented reality, said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.
“Working with Volkswagen, we are creating a new generation of cars that are safer, more enjoyable to ride in than anything that has come before, and accessible to everyone,” Huang added. A possible outcome from the collaboration between Volkswagen and Nvidia is the development of ‘intelligent co-pilot’ capabilities, which will process data from sensors inside and outside the car, according to Volkswagen.
This will enable features such as facial recognition for unlocking the vehicle, while also providing driver alerts for bicycles, gesture recognition for user controls, natural language understanding for voice control and gaze tracking for driver distraction alerts.
