Honda Malaysia revises 2017 new launches list to six models – more hybrids expected, Civic Type R too?

Honda Malaysia revises 2017 new launches list to six models – more hybrids expected, Civic Type R too?

Earlier this year, Honda Malaysia (HM) announced that it will have four launches in 2017, at the minimum. So far, the top non-national car brand in Malaysia has rolled out the Honda BR-V, Honda City facelift and today, the Honda Jazz facelift. The fifth-generation Honda CR-V has been previewed and will be the next model to be introduced.

The new models listed above have filled the quota for the minimum four launches, and HM’s MD and CEO Katsuto Hayashi revealed today that the company will launch a total of six models this year. That leaves two more new cars after the new CR-V.

Hayashi didn’t elaborate, but in the press conference after the Jazz facelift launch, group VP Akkbar Danial – when answering a question about hybrid models in Malaysia – mentioned the six new introductions in 2017 again while leaving his answer open ended. Your guess is as good as ours, but this could hint at one, or both, of the upcoming new models being hybrid.

Honda Malaysia revises 2017 new launches list to six models – more hybrids expected, Civic Type R too?

If so, the Accord Hybrid – which is available in Thailand as a range-topping model with Honda Sensing safety kit – is a candidate. The popular HR-V comes with a hybrid option in Japan too, and both models already roll out of HM’s Melaka plant with regular petrol engines. Today, HM talked about regaining leadership of a segment it once had 55% of during the tax-free CBU hybrid “golden era”, and more hybrid models would help the cause.

HM’s sales head said at the press conference that even with the extra two models, its 2017 sales target of 100,000 units is unchanged. This could hint at the two mystery models being low volume image-building cars. Now that Honda is in rich vein of form in Malaysia, could the company be contemplating a halo model such as the Civic Type R?

Now, the King of the ‘Ring may sound like a wild guess, but unlike its regional peers, Honda’s local arm has a history with Type R models – we were the only market outside of Japan to officially get the previous JDM Civic Type R. This writer remembers being at the FD2R’s launch event, which was shared with the FD Civic Hybrid. Green on one side, red on the other – a great showcase of the company’s engineering breadth. Here’s hoping.

Would Honda Malaysia aka crony DRB dare to bring Hybrid Accord and HRV in? Cause when they bring Hybrid in, it will have to be at a much lower price.

Look at BMW X5. Non Hybrid is RM588k. but Hybrid X5 40e is RM388k. This is due to tax benefits.

So the Accord Hybrid, if it comes in, might be possibly priced at RM90k and the HRV Hybrid at RM70k.

Will Honda Malaysia dare to do this to benefit the Malaysian public? Or will they still screw the rakyat up with high prices?

Jazz hybrid already placed at rm87k, how would that be? Hrv rm 70k? Accord at rm90k?

Jazz hybrid at that price cause Honda tipu Malaysians. The non hybrid jazz and hybrid jazz more or less same price DESPITE Jazz Hybrid having tax benefits. Jazz Hybrid had EEV tax benefit plus Hybrid tax benefit. By right, it should be sold at RM60k. But Honda Malaysia tipu Malaysians charging over RM87k

So can BMW and Mercedes give so much of savings for EEV and Hyrbid tax benefit?

U got a point there YB. If BMW & Mercedes can get BIG Benefits/discounts bcos of EEV, I don’t see why the Jezz/Accord hybrid cannot get Big discounts Too.

jazz hybrid without incentive should be more expensive brother. With incentive the price now similar to mid variant which is not bad.

hello… before u accused honda tipu, did u do ur research o not…. X5 can dropped so much also because of the excise duty, 3.0 is 105% and 1.5 is only 75%… and car duty is tax on tax, so it is more than 25%. that alone already is a big amount…. so stop talking shit before doing research

There is no screwing. The car distributor will still make the same profit margin. The difference is that the Gomen will collect less revenue due to the tax break. Don’t simply bark here day and night.

If the car distributor, HM in this case, decide to bring in the Hybrid versions they will have to decide whether to drop the non-hybrid versions or not. It calls for a product rationalization just like when UMWT started selling the Camry 2.5L Hybrid they decided to drop the non-hybrid version from the product line-up.

Local Mazda 3 hatch wrongly spec’ed laa…if it has most of the features as in high spec sedan it would sell. Buyers are smart in comparing.

From the market stand point green camp such as hybrid those seem to make more sense becoz the demand for better FC is there. As for the red camp civic type r just like pass experience it won’t sell a lot it is more of a niche here. And the prices is gonna be 200k above that is not really affordable for most Malaysian

I too would bet on the Accord Hybrid and Civic Type R.

Accord hybrid will be a good competition for Toyota Camry Hybrid. If Honda can have Honda Sensing and more high-tech toys into the Accord, I’m sure it will be a hit.

Civic Type R will be a halo model, as usual not expected to sell in the thousands. But expect a lot of copycat bodykits and red logo in the aftermarket.

  • Why not just launch the new 1.0L turbo engine which is used in European Civic and ditch the ancient 1.5L in the City and Jazz ? That L15A engine is here for more than 10 years already. Perhaps you can even ditch the ancient 1.8L R18A engine in the current Civic for the 1.0L turbo. Come on, R18A is used since year 2006 until now starting from the Civic FD1.
