Although Europe maintains its status as a key powerhouse in the commercial vehicles market, there is one major outlier in the US that is taking the industry by storm. Founded in 1986 following the sale and subsequent re-branding of International Harvester, International Motors (formerly Navistar) has since become one of the USA’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers. In 2024, International Motors' revenue reached over 11 billion dollars, a somewhat 74 million dollar increase compared to just one year prior.
The Traton Group’s American gateway
Since 2020, International Motors has been a part of the Traton Group, the Volkswagen Group subsidiary producing MAN and Scania vehicles, bringing some of the largest European commercial vehicle makers under one roof. In 2024, the whole Traton Group sold 335,000 vehicles, making it a relatively successful subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group in terms of unit sales, considering the nature to the vehicles produced by the Traton Group. International Motors was responsible for about 90,600 vehicles sold that year.Rebranding Navistar to International Motors
In October 2024, the company formerly known as Navistar changed its name to International Motors and completely rebranded itself. This move was part of a new strategy of the company to broaden its product and service portfolio, shifting its focus from engineering and manufacturing of trucks and buses to providing maintenance, financing, connectivity, charging, and production of parts. This change of focus might prove beneficial for the company, as the number of software-enabled and electric trucks have been growing in the recent years.
