SEI Fellow, Founding CERT/CC Director Richard Pethia Inducted into FIRST Incident Response Hall of Fame Pethia founded the SEI’s CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC) as the first computer emergency response team and led the SEI’s CERT Division until 2016. https://lnkd.in/eKZ4c4WX Current CERT Division director and former U.S. federal CISO Gregory Touhill supported Pethia’s nomination for the FIRST Incident Response Hall of Fame. “Countless people and organizations, including myself, have benefited from Rich Pethia’s leadership, technical acumen, and strategic vision. He did not just create the world’s first CERT, he arguably launched the entire cyber incident response discipline. Few people have had such a profound, positive effect on making the world a safer place,” Touhill noted.

AAAI Fall Symposium: Engineering Safety-Critical AI Systems - Call for Papers How should we build AI systems for safety-critical applications? The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Fall Symposium on Engineering Safety-Critical AI Systems, co-chaired by Eric Heim (CMU SEI) and Wanyi Chen (Duke University), will bring together domain experts, researchers, engineers, practitioners, and safety and systems engineers to strike at this fundamental question. We are seeking papers that highlight advances in AI safety research, artifacts such as procedures and tooling, and case studies in engineering AI systems. More information and links to our submission site are available at: https://lnkd.in/dJAJByfu. #ai #safetycritical

SEI researcher Björn Andersson is organizing the 4th International Workshop on Explainability of Real-time Systems and Their Analysis (ERSA'25) at the IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS 2025) in Boston, MA, USA. Today, almost all verification techniques provide answers to questions but do not provide explanations. This workshop will address that. Submission deadline is September 13. Details are available here: https://lnkd.in/evQhnVb2 #verification #ieee #rtss25

Mitigating Cyber Risk with Secure by Design https://lnkd.in/eeXAS6GX Software enables our way of life, but market forces have sidelined security concerns, leaving systems vulnerable to attack. Fixing this problem will require the software industry to develop an initial standard for creating software that is secure by design. These are the findings of a recently released paper coauthored by Gregory Touhill, director of the Software Engineering Institute CERT Division, which researches cybersecurity for national defense. In this latest SEI podcast, Touhill and Matthew Butkovic, CISA, CISSP Butkovic, director of Cyber Risk and Resilience at CERT, discuss the paper including its recommendations for making software secure by design. #cyberrisk #securebydesign
