by Jim Vejvoda

Summary:
The New Zealand Parliament has rushed legislation through to alter their labor laws in order to keep production of The Hobbit in the country. Now that I know that the Hobbit will be made regardless, I'm able to find the humor in all of this. In fact, its quite hilarious how this has blown up in their faces. That's what happens when people act like greedy SOB's.

Yea, but I'm just wondering about the other end of the story. Maybe the independent workers aren't really getting paid enough to make a living? It's really hard figuring out the entire story. But then again, you may be right. It always amazes me how many people try succling at the money teet. We don't even know if this solidifies the fact that Warners will indeed shoot in NZ afterall.

so somebody else down the line working on something completely unrelated to this is going to suffer big-time because of a panicked law change in order to line the pockets of those who changed it?

yep, sounds like a typical government to me...

this actually makes me sick, though, honestly. what the hell kind of example are they setting? ignore the film, that's kinda circumstantial. what this really says is: "none of our laws count because we can just change them whenever we feel like it anyway." so why then should anybody follow any of their laws? when the laws themselves are just whimsical playthings, flipped at the drop of a hat, anyway? what meaning then have they? yeah that's a pretty anarchic message to be putting out there...

Labour, in contrast, charged angrily that the move 'reduced New Zealand to a client state of a U.S. movie studio,'

Yep, sounds about right to me...Well done New Zealand parliament, well done!
Can't beleive all these brainless idiots taking the side of the giant corporation. Just assuming that the unions (which don't exist) were being "greedy", all the while being happy with a corportation strong-arming a government into passing legislation which will deal a blow to workers. Oh no, the poor poor multi-million dollar company! What ever would it do if it had to contend with unions! OH NO!

Yeah right, Its the unions that were greedy, not the million dollar production company whom tries to slash wages to get a bigger profit. Actually- If Unions were stronger- the industry would be better. Visual effects artist work very hard, and get burnt out by harsh overtime and low pay, and the ssumption that they should be working out of their sheer love of the craft. The Stroger the unions, the better our working conditions , and the better our working conditions, the better films we can make.
MORE power to the Unions!

Unions shouldn't need to exist anywhere. Take care of your people and they'll take care of you. Shame on Warner for threatening to film elsewhere. The New Zealand parliament was obviously bullied into this. Do we change the law or do we risk losing the whole project (and likely every future Warner project) to Canada?

Still the only good union was the European manwhore's union. Even if they did make us wash our private areas between customers. ;)
