The Nissan Murano was the Japanese automaker’s first-ever crossover. It gets a well-deserved and long-awaited makeover for 2025.
The fourth generation of the Murano comes with a new powertrain and lots of new features, including tech and comfort options making their way into this lineup for the first time ever. Yet Nissan has also, for some reason, felt it necessary to take away certain desirable offerings that used to be more affordably accessible. It sits at the upper end of the automaker’s crossover and SUV range, above the Nissan Kicks, the Nissan Rogue, the Nissan Pathfinder, and the Nissan Ariya, but below the larger Nissan Armada.
Verdict: We’ve got a lot of good things to say about this new Murano. The downgrades stick in our craw, but in reality, they represent just a small handful of the many changes that are generally quite positive.

This new Murano features an entirely new look at the front. Its next-gen lighting signature brings in a wing motif composed of horizontal lines which flow nicely into the slats spanning the width of the grille. It really has very little in common with the outgoing Murano; this face is all-new. It appears wider, too, and that’s not just due to the horizontal design elements: The model’s latest iteration is nearly three inches wider and has an extra 1.4 inches of ground clearance compared to its predecessor. We suspect Murano buyers who make ground clearance one of their criteria are few and far between, but for those who do, we’ll note that it totals 8.3 inches-more than the Toyota Crown Signia, Chevy Blazer, or Honda Passport.
Along the new car’s side, a chrome arch lines the tops of the windows, crossing paths with the black trim from their underside as it reaches the tail end of the vehicle. The crossover looks sharp, but it must be said that the winged LEDs and this chrome strip are among the most salient of the new Murano’s styling elements, and neither is very original: The distinctive Hyundai Tucson introduced both to the crossover segment in the 2022 model year. However, this reviewer does prefer Nissan’s treatment. The Murano is certainly more cohesive and more sophisticated in appearance than the Tucson or, indeed, than many competitors.
20-inch wheels come standard on the 2025 Murano, though the Platinum trim gets a 21-inch style. In 2024, the base Murano SV came with 18-inch wheels, and only design distinguished the Murano Platinum’s wheels from the middle SL trim’s, as both were 20 inches in size.
The Murano’s interior is perhaps not quite as dramatically updated as its exterior, but that’s because there’s only so much you can do to form while still fulfilling essential functions. It certainly appears more modern, with a sleeker, horizontally oriented dash layout in place of the bulkier, swoopier format seen previously. The infotainment screen is now incorporated into a single housing shared with the driver-information display, and even though it now stands up from the dash, the screen still takes up less real estate overall. Buttons are fewer and and more efficiently arranged, and the steering wheel now has just a bar across the middle rather than a three-spoke design. It’s ever-so-slightly flattened at the bottom, which will likely help Murano owners to keep track of wheel position once they’ve lived with it for a while (in our hours with the car, we occasionally forgot whether we’d left it cranked or straight). Finally, the old lever-style shifter has given way to a push-button gear selector, streamlining the center console and allowing space for a standard wireless charging pad.
That covers the layout. Now, let’s talk materials. The biggest news for the 2025 Murano is the new “Murano glass-inspired” treatment on the dash and inside the door cards. This adds a pretty ombre effect to several expansive and highly visible trim pieces. It’s a welcome alternative to piano black or worse, basic, cheap plastic. Even if the material itself doesn’t feel especially premium, the aesthetic helps to justify it. We thought it worked especially well with our Aurora Blue Pearl test car and its Ivory Caramel interior, as it appeared to echo the exterior and fade into the interior color. The glass-effect dash becomes standard with the SL trim level, which is also the focus of our major materials complaint: That middle trim previously came with genuine leather seating surfaces, but it’s been downgraded to leatherette for 2025.

The new Murano gets a new powertrain: a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine (known as ‘VC turbo, referring to Nissan’s variable compression ratio system) paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The previous gen featured a V6, which sounds great in theory, but this turbo engine is torquier. It’s rated for 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, which should make for a faster zero-to-60 if you care about such things. We didn’t floor it on our test drive, but we certainly didn’t have any complaints about acceleration. The nine-speed auto is also a substantial improvement over the old continuously variable transmission (CVT), which made the third-gen Murano sluggish when asked to pass other vehicles on the highway. While it used to be that every Murano trim was offered in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), now, the option exists only at the base level. SL and Platinum trims are AWD by default.
When we first approached the new Murano, we wondered if the high beltline would translate to poor visibility, but we were able to get the seat high enough that our view over the hood felt comparable to other vehicles in the class. Plus, Murano buyers who opt for higher trims can take advantage of Invisible Hood View for a better line of sight at slow speeds. In our experience, the narrow rear windshield was more of a problem: It was difficult to position the rearview mirror for a full view of the road behind us without lowering our seat to a point that compromised our field of vision ahead.
Noise cancellation in our Murano Platinum AWD test vehicle was noticeable during our first drive. In a crowded parking lot, shutting the door immediately cut the sounds of people around us easily in half. Active noise cancellation is standard, but Muranos equipped with the new Bose audio system get an enhanced version.

Many of the Murano’s impressive baseline comfort offerings continue into 2025, with standard heated and power-adjustable front seats. The Platinum trim adds massage to the roster of front-row amenities, and we liked that Nissan made this function easily accessible with a button placed just to the driver’s left, near the seat-adjustment controls. We did not love that the heated seat settings, which we tend to reach for more frequently than massage, are only accessible through the screen. However, Nissan reps reminded us that in vehicles equipped with Google Built-In, there’s no need to touch the controls at all: A simple “hey Google” command can handle it for you. We tried it and had success specifying particular seats and heating levels.
Both the first and second rows feature Nissan’s Zero Gravity seats, which we found super comfortable on our drive, if a little deep, almost as if they had an extended thigh cushion (they don’t). A few moments in the back seat were enough to show us that those are firmer, but still nice. Unfortunately, you now have to step all the way up to the Platinum trim for rear-seat heating, which used to accompany the SL trim.
Interior dimensions are also a bit of a mixed bag. The picture is undeniably improved up front, where leg room has ballooned to 44.3 inches and head room to 39.4 inches with the panoramic moonroof (41.1 on the Murano SV, which comes without). This makes the new Murano’s front row notably more spacious than the Toyota Crown Signia’s, Chevy Blazer’s, and Honda Passport’s. The second row, however, has shrunk with this new generation, losing 2.4 inches of leg room. It’s now down to 36.3 inches, significantly less than what any of those three competitors offers.
Cargo volume is a better story. With 32.9 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, the Murano comes second only to the Passport. The Crown Signia and Blazer also best Nissan’s offering when the rear seats are folded, exceeding the 63.5 cubic feet found in the Murano. However, the Murano does come standard with a power liftgate, which cannot be said for the Blazer, and it even becomes foot-activated with the Platinum trim.

The 2025 Murano is well-equipped when it comes to tech features, with wireless charging and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto all standard. Every new Murano also features the aforementioned slick, monolith-style display that pairs two 12.3-inch screens in a single housing, with infotainment on the right and the driver-information display on the left. Four USB ports are still standard as well, two in the front and two for the back seat, but they’re all type C for 2025 rather than the mix found in 2024 models.
That’s a pretty good array of standard features, but Nissan has more in store for Murano buyers who venture up the trim ladder. The SL trim adds Google Built-In, making Google Maps native and also introducing the voice-activated Google Assistant capability we mentioned earlier. Also at the SL trim level, a 10-speaker Bose Premium Series audio system replaces the base six-speaker system, and a 64-color ambient lighting system brings customization to the cabin. With the mid-range Murano so well-equipped, there’s not much room left for the Murano Platinum to expand on these offerings, but it does add a head-up display–particularly interesting because this feature is an extra-cost option even on the Platinum Reserve trim of Nissan’s full-size Armada.

Like the outgoing Murano, the fourth-gen model comes standard with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of advanced driver-assistance features. These include lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Unlike its predecessor, the new Murano also adds Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist. This system combines Intelligent Cruise Control (which the 2024 model did offer as a standalone feature) with Steering Assist to take some weight off the driver’s shoulders. The Murano SL and Platinum get ProPILOT Assist 1.1, a more advanced version which also uses navigation data to anticipate curves and adjust the vehicle’s speed accordingly. In a nutshell, the base 2025 Murano has adaptive cruise control and lane-centering, but higher trims can respond to more than just the other vehicles on the road when judging whether the speed needs to be reduced. A true hands-free driving experience is not available even on the Murano Platinum, but to be fair, Super Cruise isn't offered on the 2025 Blazer, either. The Hyundai Santa Fe with Highway Driving Assist 2 may be your best bet if that's a feature you really want.
The third-generation Murano earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), that organization’s highest honor. Elements like headlights and visibility have changed with the redesign, but in theory, the Murano’s safety offerings have only improved. First of all, Nissan has added a passenger’s side airbag and reinforced the seating. SL and Platinum trims now get a more advanced, 3D version of the Intelligent Around View Monitor, with added moving-object detection capability. They also get Invisible Hood View. This technology, which has proven popular on other Nissan and Infiniti models, uses cameras to provide the driver with an image of the road beneath their engine bay, improving line of sight even for drivers tall enough to see over the Murano’s hood.

The 2025 Nissan Murano SV starts at $41,860 in its base FWD form, and opting for AWD costs just $1,000 more. The mid-tier Murano SL, which is AWD by default, clocks in at $47,950. Finally, the range-topping Murano Platinum just crests the $50k mark, hitting $50,990 once you factor in the destination fees. (All prices quoted here include destination.) The 2024 Murano started at $40,130 and topped out at $49,840, meaning that this new generation has added between $1,000 and $1,700 to the price. That’s not bad, especially considering the extra content-unless the content you care most about includes things like leather seating surfaces and rear seat heating.
The midsize crossover class is a huge one with nebulous edges. It encompasses far too many vehicles to discuss here (many of which we don’t imagine most folks are cross-shopping against the Murano anyway). For the sake of simplicity, we’ve focused on the competitors Nissan reps identified on the drive program we attended: the Chevrolet Blazer, the Honda Passport, and the Toyota Crown Signia. With four trims and a choice of powertrains on each, the Blazer has the largest pricing spectrum, ranging from a base price of $36,795 to $47,595. The Passport starts at $43,795 and goes up to $49,865 for the Black Edition, and the Crown Signia, with just two trims, is priced at either $44,985 or $49,385. Aside from the Blazer, none of these rivals is available as affordably as the new Murano, but none has the audacity to exceed $50,000, either. Of course, their top trims do get awfully close.
So let’s talk running costs. The Nissan Murano is rated for 21 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 mpg combined. This is better than the Honda Passport, which is EPA-rated for 21 mpg combined, but the Blazer gets up to 25 mpg combined in its most-efficient, FWD form. The Crown Signia has a standard hybrid powertrain, so it plays in another ballpark when it comes to fuel economy, scoring 38 mpg combined even with its standard electronic AWD.
The Murano isn’t going to be the cheapest new midsize crossover to buy or the cheapest to run, but it’s much closer to the low than the high end of the cost spectrum. Its feature offerings are competitive, and with this redesign, it’s become a real head-turner. Many people seem to be looking for trucky vibes from their crossovers, but if that doesn’t describe you, the Murano is worth a look.
