Advanced safety features are not standard
The more time you spend driving the 2021 BMW X7, the more you’ll like it, except for one regularly irritating flaw.
In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.
Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.
BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.
Driving in many parts of metropolitan Los Angeles, you frequently spot examples of the BMW X7’s competitors on the road. And when you’re behind the wheel of an X7, making comparisons is natural.
In our opinion, the BMW X7 has greater interior quality than a Cadillac Escalade, more prestige than an Infiniti QX80 or a Lincoln Navigator, extra layers of technological sophistication over a Lexus LX 570, and significant visual presence in comparison to a Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. But while we think it’s one of the better vehicles in the class, emotion drives choice in this segment, and you might feel differently.
Three versions of the 2021 BMW X7 are available. The X7 xDrive40i starts at an MSRP of $74,900, the X7 M50i kicks off at $99,800, and the Alpina BX7 extracts a hefty $141,300 from your bank account.
Our X7 xDrive40i test vehicle came with 22-inch aluminum wheels, premium extended leather, a leather-wrapped dashboard, an Alcantara suede headliner, glass interior controls, and a trailer hitch to leverage the 7,500-pound maximum tow rating. Additionally, it had all five available option packages, resulting in a window sticker reading $91,745, including the $995 destination charge.
You can blame the X7 for the giant grille trend at BMW. But, just as Acura kicked off its now-defunct “power plenum” grille design with the 2007 MDX (on which it looked right), the X7’s massive kidneys are appropriate on this large SUV. On a BMW coupe, convertible, or sedan, perhaps not so much.
In any case, the X7’s styling is appealing, expressing traditional BMW cues and enough glam to claim its rightful position at the top of the automaker’s SUV ladder.
Inside, the X5 and X7 share plenty, but with some minor differences. The two SUVs look and feel nearly identical from the driver’s seat, but this is not a problem. They share high-tech design, high-quality materials, mostly intuitive controls and technology, and some quirks that require acclimation over time.
For 2021, BMW electrifies the xDrive40i’s smooth and silky turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, which supplies 335 horsepower from 5,500 rpm to 6,500 rpm and 331 lb-ft of torque between 1,500 rpm and 5,200 rpm. The turbo engine pairs with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive rear-biased all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
BMW’s eBoost mild-hybrid technology adds a 48-volt starter/generator and a 48-volt second battery. The battery automatically recharges when the SUV is coasting and through regenerative braking technology ported over from the automaker’s X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid model.
The 48-volt battery powers numerous vehicle systems to reduce the load on the engine, activates the automatic engine start/stop system sooner as the X7 is coming to a stop, extends the period during which the engine remains off when stopped, and allows for coasting without the engine running in specific scenarios. BMW also says the system offers an “electric boost effect” for improved responsiveness while accelerating.
Presumably, the point of this eBoost technology is to improve fuel economy. However, when you review official Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings, the 2021 X7 xDrive40i rates lower than the 2020 version. Across the board, fuel economy drops by one mpg, to 19 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in combined driving. On the testing loop, the X7 returned 19.8 mpg while running in Sport mode the majority of the time.
Whether or not eBoost alters the X7's driving character, what we can tell you is there is no shortage of power. BMW claims the X7 xDrive40i zooms to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, and it’s believable.
However, we didn’t run the test loop in Sport mode because we wanted to maximize performance. Instead, we wished to minimize the excessive body motions that detract considerably from the driving enjoyment. But even when fitted with the optional Dynamic Handling Package and driving with Sport mode engaged, the self-leveling air suspension seems incapable of eradicating the rock, roll, squat, and dive that had my pre-teen complaining about motion sickness during a family ride into West L.A.
Otherwise, the BMW X7 is great to drive within the context of its mission to shuttle family and friends from gated enclaves to private schools and valet-only restaurants.
Smooth and serene, the X7 sequesters its occupants behind laminated glass. The test vehicle rode on 22-inch wheels with staggered-width run-flat performance tires, but pavement shock wasn’t an issue, in part due to the Active Comfort Drive system that’s baked into the Dynamic Handling Package. Active Comfort Drive has a road preview function that adjusts suspension tuning before getting to the bumps, cracks, and holes in the road.
Additionally, the Dynamic Handling Package includes Integral Active Steering, making the X7 easier to maneuver when parking or navigating small areas while improving the SUV’s sense of stability at higher speeds.
On highways, you get a sense of the X7’s nearly 5,400-pound curb weight, but the SUV still demonstrates effortless speed and fluidity. Like any BMW, it’s easy to go too fast in the X7, but you can program a speed warning to alert you when your velocity is endangering your driver’s license.
On canyon roads, the X7’s BMW heritage of dynamism seeps through the techno-wizardry, and a talented driver can cover ground quickly on a road they know well. But the narrower the road and the tighter the curves, the more the X7 starts behaving like a belligerent drunk in a bar, throwing its weight around in a sometimes reckless manner.
The BMW X7 xDrive40i includes paddle shifters, but we never used them because the eight-speed sport automatic transmission is nothing short of brilliant. The SUV also offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance but we decided not to risk what are undoubtedly expensive wheel-and-tire combinations by taking the X7 off-road.
Given the mountain driving and the X7’s weight, we were thankful for the Dynamic Handling Package’s M Sport brakes with blue calipers, which worked flawlessly to haul the hefty SUV down from speed.
Equipped with the Cold Weather Package (heated rear seats and five-zone climate control), the Luxury Seating Package (ventilated and massaging front multi-contour seats), and lavish extended premium Merino leather upholstery, the test vehicle was downright decadent inside.
Front-seat comfort, as you might guess, is outstanding. Heated front seats, armrests, and steering wheel are standard equipment, ensuring that even without the Cold Weather Package, you won’t be lacking for warmth in the dead of winter.
If you’re assigned to the second-row captain's chairs, don’t worry. It is exceptionally comfortable. But because the SUV’s rear doors are long, getting in and out can be difficult depending on the parking situation. A four-zone automatic climate control system ensures individual comfort levels, and the test vehicle had the available five-zone system that adds separate controls for third-row occupants.
Believe it or not, you’ll use that fifth zone. A pleasant surprise of the BMW X7 is that adults can actually fit into the third-row seat. And they won’t complain (maybe they’ll grumble a little). Accessing the third-row requires some elaborate orchestration of the front- and second-row power seats, but otherwise, the accommodations are unexpectedly impressive.
Activate the power clamshell tailgate, and the X7 reveals a small cargo space behind the third-row seat. Power-fold the rearmost seats down, and the SUV holds 48.6 cubic feet of cargo. Maximum cargo space with the second-row folded down measures 90.4 cubic feet. These figures fall short of the class leaders.
In the X7, BMW pairs its Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with an iDrive 7.0 infotainment system with navigation. Both use a 12.3-inch display, with iDrive’s touchscreen.
The iDrive 7.0 system is fully featured, and for 2021 it gains Android Auto smartphone mirroring to accompany the previously available Apple CarPlay technology. BMW also adds enhanced SiriusXM 360L with a free one-year subscription, as well as standard Connected Package Pro with unbelievably accurate traffic data, real-time parking information, and BMW Remote Services with three free months of WiFi hotspot access.
Wireless smartphone charging and a natural voice-recognition system are also onboard, as well as gesture control that is inconsistent enough to prompt obscene gestures aimed at the iDrive display screen. The “Hey BMW” natural voice recognition is excellent, responding fast and with impressive accuracy.
If you’re comfortable with modern tablet computers and smartphones, you’ll find iDrive easy to set up. The technology offers a better user experience today than at any time in its history. However, when you’re driving, it can be easy to forget where things are, prompting a distracted hunt.
The test vehicle also had a head-up display, but if you’re wearing polarized sunglasses, you can barely see it.
BMW equips the 2021 X7 with all of its safety technologies as standard features, except for what you get in the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package and the Parking Assistance Package.
Add the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700), and the X7 includes Active Driving Assistant Pro. It installs safety features like evasive-steering assist, traffic-jam assist, lane-control assist, and emergency stop assist. It also supplies an extended version of traffic-jam assist with what BMW calls “partially automated steering input” on limited-access highways and at speeds under 40 mph.
This technology works well. Many car companies say their advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) reduce stress, but the X7’s actually does. Whether driving into a major metropolitan area in thickening traffic or cruising across empty sections of America, the X7’s technology is accurate, smooth, and trustworthy.
However, since this is a review, it is incumbent upon us to share a few specific experiences while using the ADAS.
First, in moderate traffic on the gentle curves of a multi-lane urban freeway, the X7’s lane-maintenance technology seemed more reactive than proactive, as though it was having trouble reading the lane markers. Second, on the southbound Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu, at a spot where two traffic lanes merged into one, the lane-maintenance system got confused about what was necessary for that situation. Third, the Active Driving Assistant Pro system’s automated lane-changing capability executes that maneuver more abruptly than we would.
Generally speaking, though, the X7’s driving assistance technology is impressive.
The Parking Assistance Package expands the X7’s technology offering with semi-automated parallel parking assist, a surround-view camera, and a drive recorder system.
If you’re looking for a cost-effective seven-passenger SUV, a BMW X7 is not the answer. Neither are any of its direct competitors. However, BMW’s pricing aligns well with other large luxury SUVs, and the X7 comes with free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles.
The more time we spent driving the BMW X7, the more we liked it, though the suspension’s inability to eliminate head-toss among occupants is a constant source of irritation. The X7 is not quite as large as a Cadillac Escalade or a Lincoln Navigator, but it also drives less like a truck and more like a proper German automobile. Plus, the X7 offers an adult-friendly third-row seat, unlike the Audi Q7. And the Land Rover Range Rover doesn't even offer third-row accommodations. It’s also more fuel-efficient than the Infiniti QX80 and provides a far superior technology package compared to the Lexus LX.
That leaves the Mercedes-Benz GLS as the most logical alternative. Buy the one you like the most, and you’ll drive home happy if not richer for the choice.
