Honda accomplishes a lot with this mid-cycle refresh of the Civic, bringing subtle but meaningful updates to the compact car we knew and loved and expanding the powertrain lineup for the 11th generation.
As it previously did for the Accord and the CR-V, Honda has now divided the Civic lineup by powertrain. This review focuses on the gas-only Civic, offered in LX and Sport trims or as the Civic Si. The Civic Hybrid (offered in Sport or Sport Touring trims) and the Honda Civic Type R are covered as separate models.
Verdict: We absolutely recommend the 2025 Honda Civic Si for driving enthusiasts. For those new to the road and anyone looking for an affordable sedan or hatchback, the base Civic is a great choice.

Exterior updates for the 2025 Civic are fairly subtle. The lower grille area has been widened and now opens out, following the lines of the now-much-slimmer air inlets that mark the front corners. It makes for a more aggressive and eager look overall, and the Civic Si doubles down on the sporty look with a new honeycomb grille texture echoing the interior theme. LED headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs) are standard, and every 2025 Civic also gets darker taillights, with a smoked effect that elevates the rear styling a tad.
Honda has introduced a new Solar Silver Metallic paint colour, available for all Civic trims. We think Rallye Red is a spectacular choice for a Civic Si, reflecting the signature red of the sporty variant’s badge and the interior.
For 2025, the Si gets a new dedicated wheel, an 18-inch matte black style comprising five double spokes. We’ve seen “V-spoke” wheels from Honda before, but for these, we especially like how they seem to draw inspiration from the caliper shape of the Acura logo, hinting at the Si’s special character.
It remains special inside — up to a point. We liked the special red accents the Si sports on the now-familiar honeycomb Civic dash, and we thought its red seats looked great, but we didn’t like that the styling doesn’t carry through to the back row. Even the door cards feature substantial swathes of red in the front row and go black with just the tiniest lines of red contrast stitching for the back, making for two very distinctly different cabin areas. This might not bother us quite so much if the Civic Si were still available as a coupe, but since it’s four-door-only, it feels odd to treat the rear seats as an afterthought.

The base 2025 Honda Civic is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 150 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of torque. Every Civic, from the LX to the Hybrid and all the way on up to the Type R, is front-wheel-drive (FWD), but otherwise, there are significant differences in the lineup. For example, while the base Civic LX and gas-only Civic Sport use a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the Civic Si is available only with the six-speed manual.
The 2025 Civic Si is powered by a turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that reaches its peak of 200 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. Max torque of 192 lb-ft is available anywhere between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm. We loved the short throws and agreeable action of the shifter. It may not be quite as “snicky” as the gearbox in the base 11th-gen Civic (which was available with a manual through 2024), but it’s far from mushy. The clutch is light and exceptionally easy to manage, and the ride, while stiffer than the base Civic’s, is comfortable enough while still allowing for more responsive handling.
The Civic Si still comes with three dynamic drive modes — Normal, Sport, and Individual — while other models in the lineup are equipped with an Eco mode and may or may not have Sport. We could do without it, frankly: as is true of many modern cars, Sport mode increases the sensitivity of the throttle. In theory, this makes the car more responsive, but in practice, we’ve found that it just becomes artificially more difficult to modulate at slow speeds without proportionately increasing the fun factor when we’re really getting on it.
One cool new feature for the latest Si is the Formula One-inspired shift indicator on the new digital driver information display. This line of 12 pinpoint LEDs features animation that kicks in at 5,200 rpm and intensifies as the engine approaches redline, culminating with flashing and an alarm to indicate that the car is about to hit the rev limiter.
Everything we’ve said so far suggests the Civic Si’s forgiving and user-friendly operation would make it a great option for a new manual driver, but there are a few points against it. For one thing, while we did find the electric parking brake plenty stable for hill starts, we also have to acknowledge that amateur stick-shift drivers may be more comfortable with the added security of a traditional, manual e-brake with a handle they can crank. For another, while many modern manual cars display the gear and recommend shifts, the Civic Si does not provide any indication on the dash to let the driver know which gear is selected. If you’re someone who likes to have such handy features on board, you may want to look elsewhere. For driving enthusiasts and really anyone comfortable without them, we wholeheartedly endorse the Civic Si.

Both the Honda Civic Sedan and Civic Hatchback provide 998 millimetres of headroom and 1,074 mm of legroom in the front. In the Civic Si, which adds a standard one-touch power moonroof, front-seat headroom shrinks to 956 mm. Those seated in the rear get 942 mm of headroom and 950 mm of legroom in every Civic.
The Si offers 408 litres of cargo volume in its trunk, slightly less than other 2025 Civic Sedans, which allow 419 litres of cargo space. The Civic Si is just above the Elantra N’s 402 litres when it comes to storage space. As a hatchback, the Golf GTI blows them both out of the water, but its 564-litre cargo compartment is handily bested by the Civic Hatchback’s, which reaches 693 litres.
Heated front seats are standard on every Honda Civic in Canada, though a heated steering wheel si not included on the lowest grades. Only the Hybrid Sport Touring gets leather seats, a reminder that the Civic is ultimately an economy car. In the Si, though, that was not top of mind for us. As long as we focused on the better-decorated front half of the cabin, it was easy to believe that Honda made choices to be sporty rather than frugal.

Looking at tech features, it's clear the Civic Si is treated as the top trim of the gas Civic models (Type R aside). The Si is equipped to match the range-topping Civic Sport Touring Hybrid trim level and is in many cases the sole gas-only Civic to get these features.
For example, while a 7-inch touchscreen comes standard on the 2025 Civic, the Civic Si gets a 9-inch touchscreen. On the larger screen, Alexa Built-In connectivity is standard and Google Built-In is part of a Honda infotainment system for the first time. And while other trims come with eight unbranded speakers and wired versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Si gets the 12-speaker Bose Premium sound system and wireless smartphone projection, both otherwise top-trim exclusives. Lower trims do get one upgrade for 2025: Two front USB-C ports now come standard on the Civic.
New for the 2025 Civic Si is a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster otherwise offered only on the top Hybrid trim. In the Si, it incorporates the aforementioned F1-inspired shift lights and also offers helpful driver information, including navigation instructions from the native Google Maps.

Honda Sensing continues to be standard on all Honda Civics for 2025, though key driver assistance features are enhanced for the new model year. The improved collision-mitigation braking system is better able to detect bicycles and motorcycles, and it also allows for better visibility of cross traffic coming from the left or right. The adaptive cruise control system was updated to accelerate and decelerate more smoothly as it adjusts for hills, and the lane-keeping assist system was also updated for smoother performance. We liked that the on-board Google Maps put our directions right into the driver-information display, so while we were busy messing around with adaptive cruise, we didn’t miss our exit. However, we still felt the lane-keep assist was a tad aggressive with the corrections, vibrating the steering wheel rather alarmingly.
Both the 2025 Honda Civic Hatchback and the 2025 Honda Civic Sedan have earned Top Safety Pick+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and five-star overall ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This exceeds the 2024 Civic’s performance: It earned the IIHS’s second-highest designation of Top Safety Pick (no plus). Honda’s efforts to increase frame rigidity seem to have paid off, as the new Civic earned top marks in the safety organization’s new side impact crashworthiness test.

The base 2025 Honda Civic LX starts in Canada — the same country where it’s built, at Honda of Canada Mfg. in Alliston, Ontario — at $30,806 (including destination). This is also the most fuel-efficient version you can get without ponying up for the hybrid: The Civic LX is rated for 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres city, 5.7 highway, and 6.6 combined. The non-hybrid Honda Civic Sport bumps the price up to $34,666 and fuel economy up to 6.8 L/100 km combined.
The 2025 Civic Si starts at $39,066. That’s more affordable than most competitors. The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI starts at $39,181 and no longer offers a manual transmission. The 2025 Hyundai Elantra N, meanwhile, is set to start at $42,759. The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta GLI does offer a manual and is slightly more affordable at a starting price of $37,681.
The Si, with its standard manual transmission, is rated by Natural Resources Canada at 8.7 L/100 km city, 6.4 highway, and 7.7 combined. Similarly equipped with turbochargers and six-speed manual transmissions, the 2025 Elantra N and 2025 Jetta GLI manage 9.7 and 8.0 combined, respectively.
The fact is that manual options are fewer and farther between than ever before. It would have been easy for Honda to rest on its laurels, as simply allowing drivers to row their own gears already sets the Civic Si apart. But they haven’t done that. They’ve taken an already great car and made it just enough better to show they care, and that’s working for us.
