Asked by:
Keyboard, num lock and caps lock key LED's not working,

Question
-
I upgraded to build 9879 last night, and when I awoke this morning I found that my caps lock, and num lock LED's were not working, I plugged my keyboard into another computer and found they were working fine, When I restarted, I found that the led's were infact working on my technical preview pc, and that after windows had begun to boot, the led's stopped working,
I switched the HDD into another computer, and found the same issue to occur, any idea why this is happening? should I live with it, or do a fresh install?
To clarify the key's still function correctly its just the LED's that don't work

I've tried 4 keyboards,
3 USB:
Logitech K1200
Logitech G105
Corsair K70and a Microsoft Multimedia 1.0A PS2 keyboard
All of which don't display LED on caps and num locks
However back-lighting still functions as normalFriday, November 14, 2014 9:31 AM -
Same here, using a Dell Latitude E6430.
The CapsLock led of the notebooks keyboard stops working as soon as Windows 10 boots, when in EUFI / preboot environment it works fine.

their might be a problem with windows default keyboard driver, send a feedback about it through feedback app.
also, try installing the latest version of your keyboard driver and check if it would light back again.

Hi Guys,
Can you check if the OSK (On screen key board) is working fine. Is the Caps and NUM working in that ?
Meaning if you are able to type in caps and stuff like that ?

Hi Gautam.75801,
The CapsLock key itself functions normally, whether it is on my laptop's keyboard or on the OSK. I am able to type in caps normally.
It's just that the LED-indicator isn't functioning.Friday, November 14, 2014 10:18 AM -
I have the same problem. I tried 2 keyboard and for both don't work the numlock\caps\block scroll led.
I launched Win 8.1 and the keyboards work fine.

Hi Guys,
Can you test this below and let me know if this fixes the issue ?
Before you do any changes in the registry it is advised to backup the registry and do the below.
To change the behavior for currently logged in user:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\KeyboardTo change the behavior for all users:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard3. Now in right-side pane, change value of "InitialKeyboardIndicators" string value to any of following:
0 - Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
1 - Turn CapsLock On
2 - Turn NumLock On
3 - Turn CapsLock and NumLock On
4 - Turn ScrollLock On
5 - Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On
6 - Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On
7 - Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)4. That's it. Exit registry editor and restart your system to take effect.
Try changing the value of "InitialKeyboardIndicators" string value to 3 so we can check if this will solve the caps and Num issue.
Ref : http://www.askvg.com/force-capslock-numlock-and-scrolllock-keys-behavior-using-windows-registry/
Let me know the results of the above.

I also as others have this problem. Problem with just a basic key to 2 different gaming keyboards. On one gaming and the basic keyboard the key pad works but no lights.
Now in looking at my registry for all users the registry has this:
HKEY__USERS/.DEFAULT/KEYBOARD/InitialKeyboardIndicators 2147483648
I then went through each entry S-1-5-18 and so forth and the value for each is 2147483648
Gonna change the global and see what happens.
Tried it and no change..no light indicators.
Also the indicators do not work in safe mode either.
THe issue as reported in other forums ranges from just the light indicators to the number pad/ cap locks not working at all.

have you installed your gaming keyboard driver? if not, try installing it. if yes, check your updates on your driver. if you have the latest driver, contact your keyboard manufacturer for compatibility driver with windows 10. Microsoft can't fix 3rd party keyboard driver.
if your using the generic keyboard driver, send a feedback on feedback app.

Thursday, November 20, 2014 7:34 AM -
I have uninstall and deleted drivers.
I have changed registry settings per above post.
I have 2 gaming keyboards, a standard generic multimedia keyboard, and a plain vanilla non multimedia keyboard.
I have used the latest drivers as well as generic drivers.
On my Steelseries Stealth merc you cannot actually toggle numlock/caps lock.
On my Steelseries Apex, you can toggle the numlock/caps lock but no light indicator.
For both the generic multimedia keybaord and vanilla keyboard, can toggle the num lock/ caps light but no indicator.
These are all USB keyboards, I cannot test PS/2 keyboard as I do not have one.

Hi, just add my 2 cents, but did anyone try installed the keyboard driver from the previous build ?
Need to locate the ISO file as I switch to an SSD and now it boots in 5-6 seconds.

I also upgraded to Build 9879 and my Keyboard LED's stopped working too.
Other issue I have noted is that I can no longer print. All my print devices are showing. But when I try to print something, I get the pop-up windows saying that I need to install a printer before I can print anything. I restarted the windows and I can print once and all my printers show up in the pull down selector to select printer. But only once. After that if I try to print, I get the same message asking me to install printers before printing. Has anyone else noticed that? I can't figure out what is wrong at this point.

Same issue with a HP DV6 Pavilion laptop.
Numlock led is turned on, right to the moment of the spinning windows login indicator shows up, then turns off.
Caps lock and the numlock leds wont light up when in the O/S.
In BIOS, the leds will work fine and when I switch back to my original hard drive with win8 the leds work normally.

I have exactly the same problem. The easiest way to rule out the keyboard as being the cause is to boot into BIOS and try your Caps Lock, Num Lock etc there. I happened to waste money on a new keyboard which was not needed.

It is pretty much clear that Microsoft yet do not have solution on this and I am reading replies from top to bottom here and they are simply misleading everyone with illogical replies and couter-questions asking for models and drivers of the keyboards.
Standard keyboard does not need any driver and should work with generic keyboard driver installed in windows. It seems this time Microsoft have messed up badly with Generic Keyboard Driver in Windows 10.
It will be appreciated if they accept the issue and tell people they will solve it very soon and ask people to wait for some time.
Microsoft takes this kind of wrong steps and then people from other os laugh at us , windows users.
:(

Maybe they should disable the "whatever you type will be logged" feature? (joke, or maybe not?)
It isn't true that they can't fix a led in a keyboard. What is wrong here? They have done it for decades now without any problem. Why does this has to take that long?
On Apple keyboard also the same :)
On Lenovo keyboard also the same :)

It's still Beta, so while we need to report the bugs, we have to remember that there WILL be bugs and issues.
This is my main windows system and I said what the heck and installed it anyway and apart from the keyboard LED thing and a few other wrinkles, it's actually pretty good. So, MS, please fix. Everyone else, remember they said don't install on a production system, just use it to test. I ignored this and I suspect most people posting here did too, so, the bug's been reported. Chill out.

Have the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite E55t-A5320. However, the lights worked on 9841 and 9860, and they still work when I boot into Kubuntu 14.10 Plasma5. The backlit keyboard works in both OSs.
Also, I have this generic old Dell L100 (surprisingly fast and springy) that doesn't have LEDs on the keys, but there are lights for the keys that are contained in the top corner. Those light up in 9879.

I have the same issue on both of my Win10 PCs. Annoyingly enough the devastators backlight won't come on because of this. My Razer Blackwidow is having the same issue with the proper third party drivers, but the issue hasn't had an effect on the backlight.
However, on the machine with the Devastator, I was able to get the numlock light to come on with the regirsty, but it's still useless as the backlights won't come on and the numlight doesn't turn off when I turn off the numlock.

I too have issues with my Caps Lock LED not coming on, since I installed Win 10. Also,
This is what happens when I use my numlock keypad
1537 ( I pressed 1234567890 etc.. ) the numbers above the letters work fine, its just the keypad numbers dont work, it also jumps about. Tried everything in this thread. Also, uninstalling Keyboard , usb drivers, changing ports etc..
Its definatley a Build issue.
My rig is Dell 660 with Dell 01KJ4W Keyboard
Please Microsoft and you guys let me know when theres a fix

The 3 LEDs for Cap Locks, Num Lock, & Scroll Lock, plus my media touch controls, Vol Up Down, FFD, RWD, Play/Pause, Stop, nothing works. I think there are issues with their USB driver. I have a USB mic, and it shows up in sound settings, but no application is able to use it, and it does not pick up sound. Works fine on Windows 8 though.

Have you tried build 9926 yet? According to the Microsoft Windows blog this
is one of the issues that has been fixed in 9926.
