Cut the chaos for the holiday season

November 12th, 2010

The holidays are coming, and that usually means lots of frantic, chaotic activity before you can really enjoy the good stuff. Or maybe that’s just my annual experience.

Let’s face it: The holidays at this time of year require preparation. If you don’t plan well, you’ll get stuck with more madness – from last-minute cards and cooking to overbooked travel.

Here are some great apps that might help turn your My Yahoo! page into a helpful holiday organizing agent:

  • Organized Christmas — These daily ideas will help you take the frenzy out of the holiday season.
  • Simply Recipes — Great ideas for cooking that will help you prepare festive dishes that enhance every celebration.
  • Best Fare Trackers – Keep track of possible airfare deals, especially if you’re planning a getaway during the busy holiday season.
  • Hanukkah News — Reminders and tips that will enhance your celebration of the Festival of Lights.
  • Holidays & Entertaining — You can find recipes and many helpful ideas from members of the Betty Crocker community here.
  • Popular Events & Holidays at 123Greetings.com — This feed is great for remembering and sending holiday greetings of all kinds, from the popular (Thanksgiving) to the obscure (Pickle Appreciation Day).

I hope you’re able to get an orderly head start to a great holiday season.

Stay tuned to favorite fall shows

October 28th, 2010

I’m having a hard time keeping up with all the TV shows I really want to watch this season. And since I can’t always catch them when they air (and I don’t have TiVo or a DVR), it really helps to know where I can read about highlights or even watch some clips of my favorite shows online.

I have rounded up some feeds for popular shows, and included two more general apps that will help you in keeping up with the many shows I haven’t been able to include here:

  • GleeFan.com — Check out this feed for all the latest “Glee” cast news, gossip, and series developments.
  • Life in “The Office” — Cast blog posts and deleted scenes are just some of the entertaining bonus materials fans of the NBC TV show will enjoy.
  • Dexter Blog Buzz — Find out what others are saying about the Showtime shocker.
  • The Amazing Race — Follow the antics of each episode of this popular reality TV show.
  • TV Watchers Blog – This feed will cover for a lot of the shows you like that might not have a dedicated blog.
  • What to Watch — As the fall TV season continues, use this feed to catch up on the best offerings.

One benefit of the fall season is cooler weather that makes it easier to stay in and catch up on some fun TV. (Of course that means you could also do plenty of other things besides watch TV, but that’s for another blog post.) I’ll leave you with one fun clip, in which the “Glee” cast does a classic hit from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (click the image to play):

What’s New on My Yahoo!

October 14th, 2010

I thought I would summarize a few of the things we’ve been launching on My Yahoo! over the last few months.

  • Mail Aggregator – This is the new default mail application. This version allows you to add several email accounts making it easy to track them all in one place. We’ll continue to iterate and improve this application over the coming weeks and months… probably change the name of it too…
  • Yahoo! Updates – Like the Mail Aggregator, Yahoo! Updates is an aggregator but of social updates. We make it easy to track updates from Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo! with more sites coming soon.
  • Facebook – An application dedicated to Facebook. Get updates and post your own.
  • Twitter – An application dedicated to Twitter. Tweet away and track those you follow.
  • Lottery – A great new lottery application that will make sure you don’t miss your winning numbers.
