ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

Research Programme
    Ph .D and M.Sc(Engg):
These are research degrees with the emphasis being on original research leading to a dissertation, and peer reviewed publications. Students are admitted to these programs based on the performance in their previous degrees, their performance in GATE and mainly, on their performance in a technical interview with a committee comprising members of the department faculty. Each student undergoes a research training program (RTP) that is defined by the student's research advisor. Following the RTP the student is expected to clear a comprehensive examination (comprising a seminar and oral questions on the RTP). Finally, the student submits a dissertation that is peer reviewed by experts outside the department (in the case of a Ph.D. thesis the examiners are from outside the Institute). Finally, the candidate defends the dissertation by making a presentation before a defence committee.

Course based programme

M.E. (Master of Engineering):

This is a two year program to which students are admitted based on their performance in the highly competitive, nationally conducted Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Students admitted to the M.E. program of the ECE department are in the top 1% of those who qualify in GATE. The program requires students to take over two semesters of course work, including 12 credits of core courses, 12 credits of soft core courses, and several electives. In addition, there is a Masters project that the students carry out over a period of almost 13 months. The M.E. project is stringently evaluated at three stages, a thesis is an essential requirement, and often the work leads to publications. There are three M.E. Streams:

M.E (Telecom)
M.E (Signal Processing) Jointly with the Department of EE
M.E (Microelectronics)   Jointly with the Department of CEDT
