iOS 4 iPhone Update RELEASED: A Guide To iOS 4

Ios Iphone Update Release

Apple's iOS 4--its update for iPhone and iPod Touch operating systems--will be released today, June 21.

iOS 4 will bring different features to different users, depending on what Apple device they use. Only 3GS iPhones, 3G iPhones and newer iPod Touches will be eligible for the iOS 4 upgrade.

Apple Insider
says of the iOS 4 update:

Some of these features are limited to new hardware in the latest iPhone 4 (such as FaceTime video calling), while others are only available on last year's iPhone 3GS and third generation iPod touch (including multitasking).

For a full rundown of what new abilities the iPhone OS 4.0 will offer, see our comprehensive guide to iOS4's features.

Here's how to update your iPhone or iPod Touch, via CNET:

To get the update, simply connect your device to iTunes and follow the steps. It's free for both iPhone and iPod Touch users--in the past the latter group users had to pay a small fee--though iOS 4 is not compatible with first generation models of either device. Also, remember that the iPhone 3G will not support the new multitasking feature.

I just updated my iPod touch's OS and after over an hour spent backing up, installing, and restoring my media ALL of my pictures have been reduced to pixellated shit. The album thumbnails look fine, but I try to open any individual picture and it's now at a resolution so low it looks like a finger-painting. That sure as hell wasn't in the brochure/version release notice I read before I accepted the update. And because I have the temerity to own the same iPod for more than a year, when I tried submitting a service request to Apple I got a screen telling me it'll cost $26. Guess how much faith I have that whoever calls me is guaranteed to fix this for my $26?

F**king techwads, always having the tinker and fiddle and meddle with things, always "improving" something one way and f**king it up in half a dozen other ways. I suppose I'll have to try removing and then re-loading all my pictures and if that doesn't work, resign myself to looking at them on my Xperia10 phone instead even though it's a pain in the ass to sort them the way I want to on that.

Here is what I know about IOS4. On my ipod touch, 2G, it flat out sucks. Battery life is the worse now. I get about 2 hours 10 minutes before I get the battery popup warning me. Also, wifi reception strength is noticeably reduced. I used to be able to go anywhere in my house and get a good signal but now, if I leave my office where my wireless is and go into the kitchen, my signal is reduced to only 1 bar.

One other thing, I downloaded ibook.

So far so good.

Then I tried to get an excerpt of a book just to test and the excerpt would never finish downloading. I also kept getting the itunes popup to log in. I'd log in and 5 seconds later, it would pop up again and again and again. If you have not upgraded, wait until 4.1. This bites.

I thought this was only for 3G and 3GS units, not 2G. Maybe that is problem?

No background wallpapers, multitasking or bluetooth keyboard support for 2G but the update is for the 2G as well. I'll get those other features if I jailbreak this thing, which I intend to do.

My update went perfect. Took about ten minutes after the download. Great features!

I one of thousands of 3G owners that attempted the update, only to have my iphone freeze permanently. A fix then freezes it in recovery mode. This was NOT a smooth update. Also, do not attempt during peak times for apple server.

I'm getting really tired of all these "What you need to know" articles. I've ignored quite a few in recent weeks and guess what? I didn't need to know that stuff.

yep, much slower on my 3Gs, and as for backup times, also slower despite Apple's touting 'faster backup times'

Ditto here too. Kind of irked to say the least. Kind of dreading installing this on my iPad given how my 3GS is behaving. Also I couldn't get my iPhone or iPad to sync to the new iTunes. It took 7 times plugging and unplugging for it to finally detect them. And of course it took iTunes forever to open on my MS machine.

Of course it is going to run slower. If it didn't you wouldn't consider upgrading your hardware.

Step back and look at the reality people. Apple is all about it's customers buying new hardware every year and they will do anything to make that happen.
11:39 PM on 06/21/2010
Including making things people want.

By the way I bought one mac 10 years ago... still working
My girlfriends mac 5 years ago, still working

My PC friends have had several hardware upgrades when shi# just stops working, like every year or so.
I would rather upgrade to something that makes be happy than something that just gets me back where i was before the shi# froze.
