I’m a UX and web performance researcher, writer, and speaker. I believe in a faster web… and slower living.
I’ve spent the better part of my career studying how people use the web. Over the years, I’ve directed groundbreaking UX studies that have involved EEG headsets, facial action coding, and Google’s machine-learning system. My focus over the past 15+ years has been the intersection of site speed, user happiness, and business outcomes. My book, Time Is Money: The Business Value of Web Performance (O’Reilly), is a distillation of much of this research.
Since 2017, I’ve been delighted to serve as Chief Experience Officer at SpeedCurve, the world’s best (and friendliest!) provider of front-end performance monitoring tools and consulting. We help many of the sites you use every day – from Airbnb to Zillow – stay fast and user friendly.
I’ve spoken at events like Shop.org, Chrome Dev Summit, WebExpo, Smashing Conference, Beyond Tellerrand, IRCE, O’Reilly Velocity, and O’Reilly Fluent. I’m co-chair of the annual performance.now() conference in Amsterdam. I also co-curate WPO Stats, a collection of web performance case studies.
I’m based in Nelson, British Columbia, the most beautiful town you’ve never heard of.
