What am I missing ?
Started the game as Cyrus and after all the intro story got to first boss. I think I fought maybe two battles on regular mobs and am at level 2.
Tried the boss and it seemed essentially impossible. A bit hard to tell as there are no health bars on the enemies.

Looked online for suggestions, but the suggestions I’ve found seem to be for runs further along as it was suggested to add other characters to the party. I’m only a party of 1 so far.

Grinding out some levels was one of the other suggestions, but I’ve only been in the town so far and didn’t really see opportunities for that yet.

Are you supposed to fight the Boss at level 2? Am I missing something?

i can't remember exactly, but i will say this, this is the type of the game that doing a little grinding will do nothing but help. as fast as levels come in the beginning it might be a little low. i prob should unsub from this game forum because my knowledge is fading but i do remember that being a tough fight. but it will get easier after that as you start building a party and getting familiar with the break mechanics and how to save up your "boost" pellets for certain times and when to use what move.

but you may want to go grind to level 3 or just give it a few goes. i started with cyrus too and think that's the best route personally. weapons and armor make a huge difference too and there might even be a couple purple chests around that first town.

oh and my last tip is sometimes you'll see where they'll give you a "recommended level" for an area or boss. but from my experience, don't take it as "recommended" take it as "bare minimum" and you'll prob die if you're at that level. try to stay a couple/few levels above areas/bosses and you'll have a way more rewarding/non-frustrating experience.

I would say it expects level 5 or 6. If you fought two encounters you went straight to the boss and didn't look around the dungeon at all. Why not?

The dungeon didn’t seem to be too big. And I wasn’t really expecting a boss encounter. Also, I didn’t go straight to the boss. But the dungeon pretty much led me there.

Thanks all. I wander around the dungeon a bit, leveled up via a few random encounters and managed to get the boss down.

Level up a bit, and don't forget to learn a skill when you have enough job points.
