How prevalent are spiders in this game?
Is it possible to avoid seeing them entirely, or are they everywhere?
Is there a mod to remove/replace them?

They only spawn in about 4 or 5 zones, which isn't much considering the maps full scale. And some of those areas you won't even have to enter unless you're looking to 100% achievements. Other than that there's a few scorpion like enemies that could trigger similar responses for someone with a spider phobia. And a few mushroom type enemies with multiple legs.

So while I wouldn't say there's many spiders, the fact is that there is still elements in the game that could be triggering.

You're saying it as if I somehow knew this already.
I will now indeed move on, thank you for being the only one here to actually answer a simple question.

Just saying are you scared enough of spiders to put you off a masterpiece of a game which this could be for you? I'm scared as hell of dark waters but that didn't stop me from playing the masterpiece Shadow of the Colossus.

Face your fears I guess?

Are you making fun of people who have Arachnophobia?
Not all fears can be conquered so easily by simply facing them!

That is really not how it works.
"Facing your fears" usually leads to retraumatization instead.

With so many other possible creatures to pull from, decision to use "giant spiders" is unimaginative.

"Facing your fears" usually leads to retraumatization instead.

Phobias are mostly caused by your body releasing adrenaline and causing a fight or flight response. If you give in to that and flee, then your brain learns, that you got saved through that panic and will repeat this panic reaction the next time as well.

However the body can't keep adrenaline levels high for very long, so if you put yourself into a situation without fleeing, then your adrenaline will eventually get lower again and if your object of fear is still around, then that's where you can start to adapt to the situation. That's at least how exposure therapy works in general.

Though that said, it also depends on how strong the phobia is and it might not be the best idea to start with more dangerous looking or bigger spiders and depending on how strong the reaction is it might also be helpful to reduce the panic through medications. That's especially helpful in cases where the phobia is so strong, that the people start to look for excuses why they shouldn't even try to tackle the problem.

The only time exposure therapy doesn't work is when the patient feints (quite common on people who can't see blood), but in any other case it's possible, at least as long as the patient is interested in overcoming the fear, which is easier said than done in most cases.

Spiders are some of the more interesting monsters to use, given that people actually have contact to RL spiders, so even with the limited animations ingame most people can imagine how they move and such things.

Also art should never be limited by the demands of people other than the artist themself. If artists start to bow down to everything others complain about, that's when it gets really unimaginative.

Do you seriously think that literally everything that ended up in the finished piece is there by intent?
Spiders aren't here because they are "interesting monsters to use". They are here because this game follows a tradition - and they are part of said tradition.

Look, it doesn't change in the slightest when I kill spiders in real life.
The response remains, as strong as ever, with no indication that it is "related to fight or flight response". Because it is not.

The problem is, that in real life they are relatively rare. And in videogames, they are everywhere.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
