Intel acquires Israel-based Comsys Mobile Communication and Signal Processing

Intel is steadily getting some serious traction in the mobile space. Their latest move was to acquire the bankrupt Israeli based company, Comsys Mobile Communication and Signal Processing. According to reports, the U.S. chip maker paid $30 million for the deal, which has not been confirmed by either firm and we know it happened thanks to the Israeli media. Comsys’ 80 employees will now join Intel’s major mobile R&D centres in Haifa and Petah Tikva.

Comsys initially made PC modems for Conexant Systems, but later developed IPR for mobile modems. Then it entered the WiMAX business and we’ve even see them unveiling the WiMAX/GSM Android smartphone reference design.

Intel on its end is the main company behind WiMAX, though they seem to be moving their interest elsewhere lately.

According to another source close to both firms, Comsys has been on a path to failure and what Intel basically did was just hired some of their employees.

Hopefully, this and other acquisitions will help Intel get its act together and show us some processor that could actually be used in a mobile phone (i.e. not Atom).
